Multipotentialite
I recently came across the term Multipotentialite in a TED Talk, and it immediately resonated with me. I’d like to introduce you to Marinda van der Walt, a true Multipotentialite. Here is her story.
Hustle and Humility

When asked what I do for a living, it’s one of the hardest questions to answer. The truth is, there’s nothing in my business that I am not responsible for. If I don’t do it—prospecting, converting clients, managing the workflow, sending invoices, ensuring payments go out and come in—it doesn’t get done.

I wear many hats: for my clients, I serve as a marketer, coach, trainer, and payroll consultant. My official job title changes depending on the needs of the day. Sometimes I’m the administrator or manager, other times a marketing strategist, virtual assistant, or even a lecturer. The most accurate description of my role today might be “Virtual Assistant”—but even that feels limiting. And I don't believe in limits.

The Foundation: Formal and Informal Education

I hold a degree in Sport Science from the University of Pretoria (TUKS)—a qualification that, while not directly related to my current field, taught me the discipline and resilience foundational to entrepreneurship. I also completed the first two years of a BCom in Business Management through UNISA, which gave me exposure to the theoretical frameworks that underpin business. But the real education? That came from life. From short courses like Elana’s Easy Facebook Ads, to practical training through VIP Payroll and certifications such as Click Leads Academy's Meta Ads Management. These were the stepping stones that shaped me far more profoundly than textbooks ever could. I trained as a Payroll Consultant and completed an 18-month Payroll Administrator program through VIP Payroll (Sage). That opportunity changed my life. It opened the door to becoming a trainer and consultant—roles I still fulfil and cherish today.

The Philosophy: Life Is the Best Teacher

Formal qualifications provide a baseline, but true growth comes from real-world application. Life is the best school. The biggest lessons came from rolling up my sleeves, making mistakes, learning from them, and staying humble throughout the process.

Mistakes aren’t failures—they’re teachers. I believe in apologizing, learning, and improving. Entitlement has no place in meaningful work. Whether working for someone else or running your own business, the focus should always be on service: on solving problems, delivering value, and building relationships.

The Experience: Learning by Doing

I’ve started businesses, studied various industries, and adapted along the way. From sports massage and digital design to social media marketing and client management, each experience added a layer to my career path. Every venture, whether successful or not, taught me more about resilience, growth, and the people I want to serve. Over the years, I’ve found that limiting yourself to a job title also limits your potential. I’ve learned that versatility is a superpower—and that true success lies in your ability to adapt and apply your skills in a way that benefits others.

The Future: Still Learning, Still Growing

I may have come far, but I still have a long way to go. There’s always more to learn, more people to help, more value to add. I am committed to continued growth—not just for myself, but also to empowering others to grow.

If I could offer one piece of advice, it would be this: learn constantly, stay humble, put people first, and don’t wait for permission to go after what you want. Life doesn’t always come with a roadmap. But with enough grit, grace, and willingness to grow, you can build the path as you walk it.
